What this site is

Sources
- Surname counts come from Forebears, which estimates surname incidence from public records and directories.
- Linguistic notes on Hausa naming draw on standard references, including Paul Newman’s Hausa–English Dictionary (Yale, 2007), and on published descriptions of names in the ɗan- pattern.
- Biographical entries rely on independent published sources such as encyclopaedias and established news organisations. They are cited on each page.
Methodology
- Shares and rarity ratios are calculated from the Forebears counts. Rarity ratios use a world population of about 8.2 billion and a Nigerian population of about 230 million, and are rounded.
- Unsourced claims are excluded. If a claim cannot be traced to a reliable source, such as a popular explanation of what -gote means, it is reported as unconfirmed or left out.
- Living people are listed only when they are already the subject of independent published coverage, and only with information that is already public.
- Updates are dated. The figures are reviewed when the underlying sources change.
